JACK & BOB

These two have been playing together since they met in Detroit in 1986, their duo transforming over time as their music has developed. This despite moving far apart, and never more than at present; after fifteen years in the Bay Area Bob now lives in Pueblo CO and Jack is in Easton Pa, so their meetings are infrequent. They have toured on the East and West Coast and the Midwest, most recently connecting in the Bay Area, before that tours that took them from the east coast to Chicago. Their music has shifted from a huge web of notes and fast-shifting directions on conventional instruments to sound and space, with Bob playing electronics and distorted voice….yet still they are indelibly the same duo. And the best of friends.

A review of a 2012 performance in Philadelphia from Cadence Magazine: “Jack Wright (sax) and his longtime collaborator, Bob Marsh (cello, voicings) sat in cramped quarters with records stacked all around, low ceiling strung with Christmas lights, and frightful paintings lining the wall. The two explorers seemed to like the atmospheric space and quickly went about their business of quietly merging tones and thoughts. Marsh, who was on a rare trip to these parts from this California abode, used everything out of his cello case on his instrument except the kitchen sink, which he was unable to get down the steep stairs of the lair. Also of note was the sighting of Wright in real pants and not his ever-present shorts…”

GRIMM & KOSZEWSKI

Michael Koszewski (percussion) & Brian Grimm (cello, Chinese string instruments) of Madison’s psychedelic Jazz/Rock outfit Lovely Socialite join forces as a duo. Both cut from the New Music cloth, they bring sensitivity, dynamics & chops to their explorations. Between Koszewski’s 5 years in Madison’s acclaimed Clocks in Motion Percussion ensemble & BC Grimm’s array of Chinese zithers, lutes & bowed strings – who knows what sonic orchestrations may come to pass.

TONTINE ENSEMBLE

Tontine Ensemble was founded in the spring of 2014 with the mission to perform improvisational and contemporary chamber works, as well as champion the compositions of Milwaukee composers. Its four current members first played together for a Blank Radio recording session and immediately began rehearsing regularly. Allen Russell, Molly Lieberman, Pat Reinholz, and Barry Paul Clark are all classically trained musicians who teach and regularly perform in a variety of styles around the Milwaukee area and beyond.

Tontine Ensemble has appeared as guest artists at Mike Neumeyer and Friends, Danceworks, Inc. (Paleontology of a Woman – 2014, Footsteps, Shadows & Whispers – 2015), Milwaukee Follies, Formations Series for New and Improvised Music, Alverno Presents (Prince Uncovered – 2015) and The Pre-Maturely Air Conditioned Arts Collective.  The ensemble has shared the stage with JOBS, Netmoiré, Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps, Geodes, Trench, Jonah Parzen-Johnson, and Jamison Williams.

Lovely Socialite’s new CD “Toxic Consonance” made Tone Madison’s ‘Top 20 Madison Records of 2015‘ list!

10/9, 10/10 | “Toxic Consonance” CD Release Updates!

“Toxic Consonance” CD Release Updates!

Tone Madison was gracious enough to debut our new single, Humus, last week!  This 5/8 tune written by our cellist Pat Reinholz features driving rhythmic elements in combination with singing melodies.  The track opens with a distorted double bass solo by Ben Willis, and features some hardcore shredding on Gaohu (two string Cantonese bowed fiddle) by BC Grimm.  Listen to this sneak peak of the album – it sounds great, thanks to our incredible studio engineer Landon Arkens!

On Friday, 10/09 from 4-5pm Live on WSUM 91.7fm ~ Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps “Phones It In” for an interview with radio host Emili Earhart!  She’ll dig into the contents of the new album and try to pry out the inside scoop whilst premiering some of her favorite tracks off of the new album!  Tune in on-air or online!

The CDs are here and they are a pleasure to the eyes. A big Thanks goes out to our artist/designer Josh Newland – he really knocked this one out of the park.  Another special thank you to Sooper Dooper, we’re so spoiled to have a great print house/duplicator service right in our back yard.  Keep your eyes out in the coming months for a special ‘letter press’ Mrs. Phipps poster.  **We’re currently printing off limited run mirror board edition CDs, only available at live shows!

The T-shirts are here, the posters are in, it’s all coming together folks!  As the band gathers this weekend, we’ll be organizing all of the prizes to be shipped out to our Indie-GoGo supporters.  We really couldn’t have produced this album without your help, thank you so much!  Your rewards will be heading out next week!

We have a wonderful announcement: our friend and collaborator Dale Kaminski will be joining the show on Saturday! He’ll be performing live visual projections as PAKAPAKA Lightshow during the Lovely Socialite set! PAKAPAKA Lightshow always delights and adds an extra layer of narrative to some already programmatic music.  We are very excited and hope you will join us!

After 2 years of collaborating between Madison, Milwaukee & Ann Arbor ~ Lovely Socialite is finally ready to release our second CD, “Toxic Consonance”! We’ve still got our trademark odd-time signature jazz and free-improv cadenzas, however this time with a lot more distortion pedals! Come out to the release show and grab your copy: it includes wonderfully charming album art from Josh Newland, enigmatic Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps field notes by Huckleberry Grimm & masterful studio engineering by Landon Arkens. Tracking, mixing & mastering performed by Landon (aka The 7th Socialite) @ Blast House Studios.  We can’t thank him enough for his ability to bring forth the character of our live sound in the studio with such clarity. Thanks to all of our Indie GoGo supporters who pre-ordered the album, you made this possible!
