Notes on the original live score, composed and performed by Brothers Grimm & db pedersen >

In approaching the score for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, db pedersen presented the Brothers Grimm with theme sketches and initial cue concepts that had been developed with dir. Greg Harris. We then spent the next few weeks of April attending rehearsals, observing the actors develop their character. In the nights following these observations we’d convene to have fast paced cue-composition sessions. One by one, we deconstructed db’s thematic material and built them up from the ground as a trio – finding our strongest instrumentation as we went. Our goal was to reduce the sauce of these themes down to a flavorful, simple substance – and hit tech week with a lot of room to grown organically in our accompaniment to the actors.

Main instruments
AJ ~ classical guitar
BC ~ cello & guzheng
DB ~ vocal-foley/sfx, throat singing, shruti box, various flutes, animal noises

Implements & Sough!

  • Pot Lid “tree” (struck//bowed)
  • bowed Saw
  • various

    Bells

  • Slide

    Whistles

  • Woodblock
  • Wup-Wob Cards (bent//bowed)
  • boxes of Twigs//Branches
  • … & etc!

// All material played on the 21 string Chinese guzheng 古筝 zither for this production’s score is in emulation of the European harp & hammered dulcimer. The entire instrument has been customized & re-tuned to fit different theme material in each register/octave. It is a completely unique tuning, never before used on the instrument, designed specifically for this show. [ ~Traditionally, the zither is tuned in multiple octaves of a single pentatonic scale; adapting pentatonic mode to fit the key, from D1 – D5]

MSND custom guzheng tuning, from low to high >

CJ BOYD

Equal parts ambient and virtuosic, melancholic and playful, CJ Boyd’s bass playing melts glaciers, creating a sea of low, flowing rhythms, while also supplying melodies that soar over the ocean to melt the sun itself. Waves of bass loops are garnished with harmonica drones and constant improvisational exploration. This is deep-sea-diving for the hungry and alone. While certainly following in the footstep of great bassists like Mingus and Meyer, Boyd’s aesthetic sensibility also seeks to wed the minimalism of Reich and Glass with what might be called the maximalism of Beethoven chamber music. But all this is further complicated by the presence of Boyd’s improvisational prowess. Not funky, not a bassplayer’s bassplayer exactly, but something refreshing and impressive-improvising with fingers that only know how to dance to the deepest tunes. One thinks Nietzsche might have had CJ in mind when he said, “Maturity consists in regaining the seriousness one had as a child at play.” This is childsplay for the experienced listener.

Kathleen (pictured left) of Spires That In The Sunset Rise will dive through her folk inspirations this Saturday ~ reinventing a personal cannon with the help of Matthew Sanborn on Guitar

| Ka Baird writes |

Famed ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax romanticized folk music into an organic process as natural as nature itself and as widespread as the nation and its landscape.

Lomax writes:
“This art lives upon the lips of the multitude and is transmitted by the grapevine, surviving sometimes for centuries because it reflects so well the deepest emotional convictions of the common man. This is a truly democratic art, painting a portrait of the people, unmatched for honesty and validity in any other record….Folk song, like any serious art, deals with realities-with poor boys a long way from home, with workers killed on the job, with bloody- handed murderers, with children dancing and fighting in the back yards, and with the dreams of all of these folk. There are deep shadows on this landscape, the shadows of poverty and graceless toil. There are bitter hard lines in these faces, lines of violence and cruelty…”.

Meanwhile, musician John Cage believed art’s sole purpose was to sober and quiet the mind so that it is in accord with what happens. He said he didn’t understand how people could be terrified of new ideas as he was terrified of the old ones.

John Cage:
“I don’t want sound to be psychological. I don’t want a sound to pretend that it’s a bucket, or that it’s a president, or that it’s in love with another sound. I just want it to be a sound. Emmanuel Kant said there are two things that don’t have to mean anything, one is music and the other is laughter.”

I posit these two men Alan Lomax and John Cage for you as I invite you to this upcoming event at Shockrasonica where we can all quietly ponder
a) if FOLK music grew too fond of itself and b) what the hell FOLK music is

So…..

To celebrate Alan Lomax’s January 31 birthday, in honor of the venerable Odetta, and in memory of the great Bert Jansch, I (Kathleen from Spires) am hosting an evening of REVERIE at the Shockrasonica, Madison, WI on Saturday February 23 that features a set of folk classics that have reliably shaped, reshaped, chiseled, reschiseled, distorted and redistorted my reality over the past couple decades. I will be taking the bull by the horns and singing alongside guitarist Matthew Sanborn a slew of numbers by such masters as Odetta, Nina Simone, Donovan, Bert Jansch, Nico, Sibylle Baier, Nick Drake and others. Matthew Sanborn and I will be joined by local talents~~ the hearty Dietrich Goesser and the cryptic Brothers Grimm to round out the evening!

Please come one and all!

“Ebenezer Scrooge needed visits from the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future to uncover his charitable side. One imagines it was far easier to convince a gang of local musicians to come together for Heat Aid, a new performance series designed to benefit the Keep Wisconsin Warm/Cool Fund.

The three-week series, which kicks off on Saturday December 1, was put together by Arts Extract, a weekly podcast focused on the Madison-area arts scene, and features performances by a diverse array of local acts, including one-man jug band Boo Bradley and mellow singer-songwriter Dietrich Gosser.

All of the shows are scheduled to take place at MadCity Music Exchange, 600 Williamson St. Admission to each all-ages event is free, though there is a suggested donation of $5 to the Keep Wisconsin Warm/Cool Fund, a non-profit organization that helps local residents maintain heat and power in times of emergency — an absolute necessity as the temperatures continue to plummet into the winter.

Attendees will also be able to purchase raffle tickets for prizes donated by the Fund and MadCity Music Exchange, with all proceeds going to the charity.

Visit madisonartsextract.com for more information about the event and kwwf.org for more information about the Keep Wisconsin Warm/Cool Fund or to make an online donation.”

Here is the full schedule of performers:

Saturday, Dec. 1, 2 p.m.: Boo Bradley

Saturday, Dec. 8, 2 p.m.: DB Pederson, the Brothers Grimm and Spires That in the Sunset Rise

Saturday, Dec. 15, 2 p.m.: Dietrich Gosser and the Tiny Band

11/30 | Austin Duerst of Isthmus writes |

“Sorry, Wisconsin, but your winters are brutal. Beautiful as they might be the day after that first snowfall, the rest of the season is, for most, a struggle to stay warm outside. For an unfortunate few, the fight continues indoors, as heat is a luxury they can’t afford. That’s why, beginning this Saturday, the Madison music community will gather to launch a free concert series called Heat Aid.

Taking place at local record store MadCity Music Exchange three Saturdays in a row — Dec. 1, Dec. 8 and Dec. 15 at 2 p.m. — the performances will feature a variety of Madison musicians, with all proceeds going to the Keep Wisconsin Warm/Cool Fund, a statewide nonprofit that helps low-income residents get the heat and air conditioning they need.

Presented by the hosts of local podcast Arts Extract, the concert series was a straightforward way to bring together various cells of the music community while supporting a worthy cause. Scott Gordon (an Isthmus contributor) recruited the series’ musicians. The mention of helping needy neighbors rallied several local musicians almost immediately.

“The whole [music] slate is just a testament to the generosity that Madison musicians have when it comes to supporting a good cause,” says Arts Extractcontributor Mark Riechers.

Featuring a half-dozen performers and various music styles, the lineup includes Dietrich GosserThe Tiny BandDB PedersenThe Brothers Grimm and Spires in the Sunset Rise. Also featured are blues stompers Boo Bradley, who’ll kick-start the series.

Boo Bradley’s singer, Scott “Boo” Kiker, once received financial support from the Fund himself.

“It made it that much easier for me to help out,” he says, recalling how the Fund helped him fill propane tanks with gas to keep warm during a winter in the country. “Winter is a real issue here. I grew up down south, and there you can live through winter without heat. You wouldn’t be comfortable, but you could do it. Here, you just can’t. It’s a life-and-death matter.”

The Fund forges community partnerships and relies on the support of private donors as well. They work hard to spend every penny effectively.

“We’re very proud of the fact that we keep our administration costs at 5% or less, meaning that every time you donate a dollar, 95 cents of that is going to help somebody literally stay warm,” says the Fund’s events director, Angela Flickinger.

In other words, Heat Aid attendees can step into a cozy shop filled with good music, and they can leave feeling a bit warmer inside.”
