FAUN AND A PAN FLUTE  (ATL)

CYRUS PIREH  (MPLS)

BRENNAN CONNORS & STRAY PASSAGE  (MAD)

Though experimental may be the quickest catchall word that comes to mind when describing Faun and a Pan Flute, the multi-talented nine-piece has evolved beyond its experimental roots. Last year’s sprawling self-titled LP showcased a virtually unclassifiable, new musical vocabulary. The individual strengths of the group’s members ebb and flow, giving each song its own tonal combinations where change is the only constant. Every song is composed with careful precision, but the unpredictability of the group’s songwriting adds a fluidity uncharacteristic of contemporary classical music. With any of its debut album’s four numbers, “John,” “Linda,” “Augur,” and “Dave,” Faun glides from swells of noise to modal motifs to abstract textures. The collective’s true strength lies in how nine musicians with such distinct styles find a unifying form instead of devolving into a battle of conflicting egos. Even when the group descends into an amorphous mass of sound, every second is unmistakably Faun.

Cyrus Pireh, a crafty guitarist who leans towards the tremolo side of life, specializes in making guitar amps inside of pill bottles and out of old telephones.  Recently, Cyrus joined up with Rob Lundberg (JOBS) & Ryan Packard to form power trio Nestle.  We can’t wait for his solo set on Monday!

Experimental Jazz Trio Brennan Connors & Stray Passage has been performing in Madison for over three years, exciting listeners with their range of sonic capabilities. The breadth of a performance ranges from focused minimalism to fiery high energy music, all while maintaining a sense of narrative organization and compelling ensemble interplay. Repertoire includes original compositions, a few old favorite tunes, and raw improvisation. The group is led by Brennan Connors on tenor and soprano saxophones. Geoff Brady provides orchestrated drum and percussion textures & Brian Grimm who rounds out the trio playing cello, contra-cello, and electric bass.

Lovely Socialite, formerly Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps, is a Madison-based six-piece that combines the aesthetics of modern jazz with contemporary classical, driving rock, and hip hop. Lauded for their bold and intricate compositions, the group often draws comparisons to Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention. The bands original music combines strict notation with moments of improvisation and maintains a healthy balance of dark and heavy rock grooves with quirky jazz obscurities.

While Lovely Socialites unusual mix of strings, traditional Chinese instruments, brass, and a jazz rhythm section suggest that the group might be a contemporary music ensemble, it is their use of stomp boxes, vocal processors, and other electronics that makes the group a suitable fit for any rock, hip-hop, or jazz bill. In fact, Lovely Socialite has been privileged to share the stage with such artists as Dessa, of Minneapolis hip-hop collective Doomtree, as well as performing live on the UW Madison Terrace with Brian Ritchie of the Violent Femmes.

For the past three winter seasons, local folk musicians, headed by Anna Vogelzang, have banded together to present Wintersong, an all-ages holiday show to benefit Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin. In 2014 alone – thanks to a packed Barrymore Theatre – over $10,000 was raised, providing 30,252 meals for families and individuals who struggle with hunger. Since 2012, Wintersong has raised 40,452 meals to help end hunger in southwestern Wisconsin.

The public is invited to join musicians Anna Vogelzang, Phox, Love High, Corey Mathew Hart, Faux Fawn, Crane Your Swan Neck, and special guests as the band of merrymakers cover holiday tunes, perform seasonal group numbers, and raise donations for Second Harvest Foodbank in this family-friendly, fun-filled event’s fourth year.

The concert, presented by Majestic Live & the Barrymore Theater, will take place at the Barrymore Saturday December 12, 2015 at 8PM. This event is generously supported by the Isthmus, Wisconsin Public Radio, Furthermore Beer and WORT.

Guests will also hear from Kris Tazelaar of Second Harvest. A raffle with prizes from many local businesses will be held during the evening as well.

Concert tickets are $18 in advance, on sale at B-Side Records, Frugal Muse, Strictly Discs, Star Liquor, MadCity Music, Sugar Shack and the Barrymore. Charge tickets at 608-241-8633, or order online at BarrymoreLive.com. On the day of the show, tickets will be available for $20 at the door, for $18 with a non-perishable food donation or a student ID, or for $10 for children under 12. Non-perishable donations are welcome. For more details, see Wintersong-Madison.com.

NIGHT LIGHT: The Owls Are Not What They Seem

Twin Peaks Party: music, book signing, coffee, screen printing, costume contest, and more!!!

I’m thrilled to have this opportunity to put together a little 7-piece group called, “Leo Johnson & The New Shoes” (which I believe was coined by our very own Huckleberry Grimm) – comprising of Lovely Socialite members BCG, Abe Sorber, Corey Murphy & Pat Reinholz, joined by Geoff Brady (drums – Stray Passage, Yid Vicious), Rob Lundberg (bass) & Julian Lynch (sax & clarinet).  Over the past 2 weeks, Lovely Socialites, including Pat Reinholz, Corey Murphy, Ben Willis & myself, have been hard at work arranging the famous Angelo Badalamenti soundtrack from the show.   Recently, I sat down with Scott Gordon of Tone Madison at WORT for an interview on the arranging process – check it out here! >> Tone MSN – Brian Grimm on channeling the music of Twin Peaks

From the MPL:     Madison Public Library and the Wisconsin Book Festival are pairing up to present Brad Dukes, author of Reflections: An Oral History of Twin Peaksfor the Bubbler Night Light event The Owls Are Not What They Seem. The author will be visiting from Florida and discussing his book through a Q & A style platform.

Craig Grabhorn / c.Cal Design Studio . Artist-in-Residence, with other visiting print artists, will be hosting a Screen Printing party. Patrons are invited to bring their own T-shirts, canvas bags, etc. to have printed with a one-of-a-kind, Lynchian-inspired design.

Buy Twin Peaks screen printed posters by Patchwork Printshop

Tandem Press, local professional press and artistic laboratory, will display prints by Twin Peaks’ director David Lynch and discuss his creative experimentation process.

There will be Twin Peaks-inspired live music (Road House-style) from Leo Johnson and the New Shoes (music arranged by Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps): musicians include Julian Lynch – sax & clarinet, Geoff Brady (Yid Vicious, Stray Passage) – drums, BC Grimm (Lovely Socialite) – bass & cello, Corey Murphy (Lovely Socialite) – trombone, Abe Sorber (Lovely Socialite) – vibraphone, Pat Reinholz (Lovely Socialite) – cello.

More music and weirdness from Half Whale.

Plus we’ll have donuts stacked to the sky, coffee (black as midnight on a moonless night), and pie that is worth the stop. Twin Peaks-inspired cocktails and refreshments by Forequarter

Come dressed as your favorite Twin Peaks character and have your picture taken in the Black Lodge photo booth.

Come enjoy this Lynchian event!

”    Golden Donna’s return to Madison! Heady electronic music to balance your groove chakra. “… trippy club-crunched double helixes .. skybath of breezy balcony themes, trap-flecked trampoline electronics, pale dream-pitched slow-rides, and diamond-headed aerodynamics … There’s a consistent looking-glass curvature to the way he bends textures and percussion, giving them this lens flare plasticity, like a warped sheen of translucent plastic … Dense but dispersed … towards warmer climes.” via100% SILK    ” (*From SnakeOnTheLake)
