(review via Arts Extract Podcast 07/01/13 >)

” Watercourse Quartet showcases the willfully unsettling improvisations of four players who’ve each left a distinct mark on Madison music. Several of the Quartet’s members play in the ambitious avant-jazz band Lovely Socialite Mrs. Thomas W. Phipps […]; bassist Ben Willis has played behind Anna Vogelzang. Cellist/multi-instrumentalist Brian Grimm has recently played some live sets with Julian Lynch, and lately has composed everything from original scores for Madison theater companies to the cracked instrumental hip-hop of his project Brain Grimmer. Grimm and his brother A.J., record dense compositions under the name The Brothers Grimm. […] the album mixes cello, upright bass, classical guitar, and Chinese stringed instruments in sometimes-scraping, playfully obtuse pieces.

“NoExit invites you to check into a world where not all things are as they seem… One part Shakespeare, one part Freud, and one part Parnassus, This Is Not Shakespeare’s Macbeth invites you inside a hospital turned imaginarium to witness how susceptible we all are to the power of our own imaginings.

From director Michael Burke (Medea, Pillowman, I Am Peter Pan) this site-specific work, built atop the original Shakespeare, examines the intrinsic connection between conscious and conscience: the idea that retribution comes from within and it is the demons of our own minds that bring us the greatest grief in the wake of our actions.

Pulling from imagery and practices of sanatoriums and asylums of old, and featuring original, live soundscaping by Madison, WI-based, The Brothers Grimm, devices of hospital lore become the stuff of nightmares, transforming the hospital gallery as the wards take an active role as characters and scene-setters in the mania of two particular patients who seem to be violently reliving the events in their lives that continue to torture their souls…

The Irvington Office Center will host …Macbeth, opening on Thursday, June 13, and running through Saturday, June 29.

Notes on the original live score, composed and performed by Brothers Grimm & db pedersen >

In approaching the score for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, db pedersen presented the Brothers Grimm with theme sketches and initial cue concepts that had been developed with dir. Greg Harris. We then spent the next few weeks of April attending rehearsals, observing the actors develop their character. In the nights following these observations we’d convene to have fast paced cue-composition sessions. One by one, we deconstructed db’s thematic material and built them up from the ground as a trio – finding our strongest instrumentation as we went. Our goal was to reduce the sauce of these themes down to a flavorful, simple substance – and hit tech week with a lot of room to grown organically in our accompaniment to the actors.

Main instruments
AJ ~ classical guitar
BC ~ cello & guzheng
DB ~ vocal-foley/sfx, throat singing, shruti box, various flutes, animal noises

Implements & Sough!

  • Pot Lid “tree” (struck//bowed)
  • bowed Saw
  • various

    Bells

  • Slide

    Whistles

  • Woodblock
  • Wup-Wob Cards (bent//bowed)
  • boxes of Twigs//Branches
  • … & etc!

// All material played on the 21 string Chinese guzheng 古筝 zither for this production’s score is in emulation of the European harp & hammered dulcimer. The entire instrument has been customized & re-tuned to fit different theme material in each register/octave. It is a completely unique tuning, never before used on the instrument, designed specifically for this show. [ ~Traditionally, the zither is tuned in multiple octaves of a single pentatonic scale; adapting pentatonic mode to fit the key, from D1 – D5]
