77 Square gave the Brothers Grimm a shout out as one of the festival’s highlights!

The inaugural Lost City Music Festival, which features more than 70 bands performing at six local venues over the course of four nights, is arguably the best deal Madison music fans will see all summer.

:

A wristband costs just $10 and grants admission to all of the festival’s shows (age restrictions apply at the 21-and-over venues), which focus heavily on local and regional acts.

:

Among the highlights are Chicago’s Mutts (Thursday, July 5 at High Noon Saloon, 701 E. Washington Ave.), who straddle the line between the drunken piano balladry of Tom Waits and the bluesy psychedelia of Queens of the Stone Age, local duo the Brothers Grimm (Saturday, July 7 at the Good Style Shop, 402 E. Washington Ave.), who dress like would-be lumberjacks in press photos but specialize in unsettling, string-based classical compositions, and Chicago dance-rockers Aktar Aktar (Saturday, July 7 at the Rigby Pub & Grill, 119 E. Main St.).

Anonymous Choir, Watercourse Quartet w/ Page Foster & Liz Sexe, Elephant Michah

Tuesday, June 5
Olin Park Pavilion
7:00 PM, $8

~ Isthmus writes:

“In a special concert at Olin Park Pavilion, the Minneapolis-based Anonymous Choir will be joined by Madison’s most eclectic string ensemble, the Watercourse Quartet. Also performing will be singer/songwriter of cult status, Elephant Micah.

The Anonymous Choir is the project of Dark Dark Dark’s Nona Invie. Nona has established herself as a writer of songs of melancholic beauty for DDD, and has toured the world with that group. This choir of all women, a relatively new ensemble, has come together over the joy of singing together. Seeing them perform in the intimate and reverberant space of Gates of Heaven will be a rare pleasure.

The Watercourse Quartet, made up of two well-established string duos in Madison: the Weather Duo and the Brothers Grimm, specialize in improvisation and collaboration. Exploring concepts ranging from ancient Chinese music to contemporary texture-based sound art, their performances are experiential and engrossing. They will be joined in this performance by Madison-based singer/songwriter Page Foster, & Dancer Liz Sexe.

Elephant Micah  has released many albums over the last decade, and has become a cult figure in the underground folk world.

Redolent Spires Release ~ AV Club shout out

Shout out in AV Club

“With a combination of backgrounds in Chinese music and Flamenco, The Brothers Grimm (Brian and AJ) are able to create extremely striking contemporary classical with only string instruments. Compositions like “Stochastic Contexture: Heads” possess the unique ability to calm and agitate almost silmutaneously. Here, the Brothers will be celebrating the release of their new full-length, Redolent Spires, within the comfortable confines of Dobrá Tea on State Street. A somewhat uncommon venue will seem perfect for this somewhat uncommon line-up, featuring vocal wonder DB Pedersen, The Watercourse Quartet, and what’s being billed as a “mega DJ party-athon-#1-fun-time” to close out the night, featuring DJs Bohemian Transplant and Doctor Oxygen.”
