Don’t shave those early-winter beards Gentlemen! Madison Central Library is proud to join with the Wisconsin Book Festival on Friday December 4th from 8-11pm at Central Library to celebrate all things facial-hair.

Come with mustaches coiffed for our Beard and Mustache contest judged by local barbers. Or add some cheer to your chin with Beard Baubles!

Unable to grow a chin sweater? No worries, make one with the Bubbler craft team and pose with your new creation in our photo booth with visiting photographer James Bellucci.

Just a few days after the end of Movember, we will celebrate with a book talk by Of Beards and Men author Christopher Oldstone Moore. Oldstone Moore makes the case that today’s bearded renaissance is part of a centuries-long cycle in which facial hairstyles have varied in response to changing ideals of masculinity. To a surprising degree, we find, the history of men is written on their faces.

No stranger to the intricacies of well-crafted hair, the work of local artist Romano Johnson will be on display in the Third Floor Diane Endres Ballweg Gallery for his “Blue Earth Angels” exhibition and video art display of “Hair Apparent”.

Grab a drink for Forequarter that is sure to put hair on chest… or you know, chin.

Music at 8pm, author talk begins at 9 with crafting happening all night long.

Saaz is proud to present sitar Maestro Pt. Sugato Nag (Kolkata, India) in a LIVE Sitar concert. This will be a special jugalbandi concert with his son Snehesh Nag on sitar. Subhasis Mukherjee will accompany on Tabla.

I have been studying Indian Classical music on cello with sitar master Sugato Nag for the past year.  After 15 years of appreciating Indian Classical as a listener, I’m finally getting a player’s window into the deep inner workings of this profound musical tradition!  Nag’s guru, Pandit Buddhadev Das Gupta, is a sarod master who’s lineage fuses three major schools of sarod playing.  Buddhadev Das Gupta’s gharana has produced in Sugato a highly melodic style.  Variations of the chalan, the main melodic themes of a raga, spin outward in marvelous fashion.  During the opening alap section of a raga performance, Sugato bends melodies out of a single note, called a meend.  At times, by grabbing an upper harmonic tone of an already stopped left hand note, he is able to extend the meend.  It’s certainly hard to describe, so come hear it for yourself this Friday!

New Track Release!  Tues, 8/11 on Obsolete Media Objects:

This new ambient remix of “slowly by your passing” by BRAIN GRIMMER is part of a living-document remix compilation on Obsolete Media Objects, titled “Visions & Revisions“.  The original track was released on CJ Boyd’s album Precariat (available on Joyful Noise Recordings). Thanks to special guest, Geoff Brady on drums.

This 12-minute piece is a sonic meditation in remembrance of the many unarmed people of color who have suffered police brutality. It is a painful prayer dedicated to the families and communities who have lost their loved ones to such violence. For those in the Madison, WI area who are willing to pay for this remix, I urge you to instead, donate your money to Young Gifted & Black Coalition’s go-fund-me campaign.
