Got my #cello back from the #luthier on this week! Nat Taft (Taft Violins) re-shaped my bridge, cleaned it up (it was looking ~120 y/o 🤪) and added some super thin parchments for the A&D strings. After switching back to steel strings (from gut) my A&D were sinking into the bridge grooves instead of sitting on top of the bridge. Nat also fixed my nut by adding a little height, again the grooves had been worn too deep from the thick gut strings. This was crucial, we don’t often consider the string height at the nut, but it was really effecting the performance of my string sets in a negative way. Just a hairs diameter is enough to change the tension and response of the string! “A millimeter is a mile for string instruments” agreed Nat. I’ve definitely learned this to be true in all if my #setupmadness experiments. Now that Nat has fine tuned my bridge and nut for this string setup, I feel like I can finally finish my review of @pirastroofficial Perpetual Soloist cello strings! //Oh yeah! He also rehaired my bow with white hairs, first time in about 3 years that I’ve had it set up like that! (Was using salt’npepper or black hairs for the thick gut strings). Very happy with the sounds I’ve been getting this week out of my instrument! Still adjusting to the new setup, but I see a lot of potential here!
