“Famed ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax romanticized folk music into an organic process as natural as nature itself and as widespread as the nation and its landscape.
Lomax writes:
“This art lives upon the lips of the multitude and is transmitted by the grapevine, surviving sometimes for centuries because it reflects so well the deepest emotional convictions of the common man. This is a truly democratic art, painting a portrait of the people, unmatched for honesty and validity in any other record….Folk song, like any serious art, deals with realities-with poor boys a long way from home, with workers killed on the job, with bloody- handed murderers, with children dancing and fighting in the back yards, and with the dreams of all of these folk. There are deep shadows on this landscape, the shadows of poverty and graceless toil. There are bitter hard lines in these faces, lines of violence and cruelty…”.
Meanwhile, musician John Cage believed art’s sole purpose was to sober and quiet the mind so that it is in accord with what happens. He said he didn’t understand how people could be terrified of new ideas as he was terrified of the old ones.
John Cage:
“I don’t want sound to be psychological. I don’t want a sound to pretend that it’s a bucket, or that it’s a president, or that it’s in love with another sound. I just want it to be a sound. Emmanuel Kant said there are two things that don’t have to mean anything, one is music and the other is laughter.”
I posit these two men Alan Lomax and John Cage for you as I invite you to this upcoming event at Shockrasonica where we can all quietly ponder
a) if FOLK music grew too fond of itself and b) what the hell FOLK music is

To celebrate Alan Lomax’s January 31 birthday, in honor of the venerable Odetta, and in memory of the great Bert Jansch, I (Kathleen from Spires) am hosting an evening of REVERIE at the Shockrasonica, Madison, WI on Saturday February 23 that features a set of folk classics that have reliably shaped, reshaped, chiseled, reschiseled, distorted and redistorted my reality over the past couple decades. I will be taking the bull by the horns and singing alongside guitarist Matthew Sanborn a slew of numbers by such masters as Odetta, Nina Simone, Donovan, Bert Jansch, Nico, Sibylle Baier, Nick Drake and others. Matthew Sanborn and I will be joined by local talents~~ the hearty Dietrich Goesser and the cryptic Brothers Grimm to round out the evening!
